Most clinically apparent miscarriages (two thirds to three-quarters in various studies) occur during the first trimester. Cramping and vaginal bleeding are the most common signs of miscarriage noticed with spontaneous abortion. The cramping and bleeding may be very mild, moderate, or severe. There is no particular pattern as to how long the symptoms will last.
The other types of miscarriage include the complete miscarriage, which means the pregnancy is completely over and your uterus is empty. You may also have an incomplete miscarriage, which means that your baby has died but the uterus still contains parts of the placenta, which may require a surgery known as a D & C (dilation and curettage).
